Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful glass jarlet presenting a unique form with a vertically-ribbed body and a concave shoulder, all complemented by a faint rainbow iridescence that complements its form without overwhelming its light green coloring. Sitting upon an inverted base, the vessel presents a round body that tapers to a cylindrical neck and flared rim. Jarlets like this one would have been used to store anointing oils or sweet and floral fragrances at Roman lady's toilette. Size: 2.3" Diameter x 2.6" H (5.8 cm x 6.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-old private Ohio, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s; ex-Arte Xibalba, Florida, USA, prior to 2000

  • Condition: Light surface wear as shown, but otherwise intact and excellent with rich earthen deposits and light iridescence in areas. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
