Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. late 3rd to 4th century CE. A fine free-blown glass pitcher of a transparent, pale-green color with a slightly concave base presenting a smooth pontil scar, an applied, disc-shaped foot, a globular body, a tubular neck, an everted and in-folded rim, and a wide applied trail handle joining rim to shoulder. The handle, made from glass of the same color, was applied and then double-folded before it was attached to the side of the rim. The glass remains wonderfully translucent, with hints of rainbow iridescence in places, especially around the interior of the mouth. Size: 3.65" W x 5.45" H (9.3 cm x 13.8 cm); 5.95" H (15.1 cm) on included custom stand.

#139632

  • Condition: Repaired around the lower body, with repairs well done and unobtrusive. Faint rainbow iridescence on surface. Vessel possesses a pontil scar or mark which indicates that the vessel was free-blown. (The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.)
