Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A heavy green glass open-topped jar, possibly used for ink or for cosmetics like kohl; a pretty iridescent patina covers some of the body. Made using the glassblowing technique that revolutionized an industry in ancient Rome, taking it from a small, specialized production limited to a few small areas to a huge consumer technology in the mid-first century CE. Where items would once have been made of pottery, suddenly they were made of glass, which became omnipresent in Roman life. Small bottles like these were used to hold the toilette items used by men and women of nearly all class levels in Roman society. Size: 2.25" W x 1.55" H (5.7 cm x 3.9 cm)
