Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This stunning glass oinochoe, a tall pouring vessel, sits upon a flattened base, rises into a spherical body, then narrows to a tubular neck topped by a trefoil spout with threadlike trails encircling below the rim. A handle applied to the shoulder is pulled up to the trailing and then folded into the lip. The iridescence that has developed over the ages is otherworldly; swirls of rainbow across most of the body; a nebula of radiance. This is a spectacular piece of Roman artistry that has aged beautifully. Size: 2.5" W x 4.75" H (6.4 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Martin Wunsch collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s

#157490

  • Condition: Old inventory label inside cavity. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Surface wear and weathering commensurate with age. Nice earthen encrustations and liberal areas of rainbow iridescence.
