Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. An elegant free-blown oinochoe comprised of blue-green glass with an applied foot and a nice pontil scar. The globular, near spherical body gradually tapers to a tubular neck that in turn gradually flares to a wide in-folded rim, and an applied thick trail handle joining rim to shoulder. Brilliant layers of silvery and rainbow iridescence embellish the soft spring green-blue color of the body in a palette of ruby, sapphire, amethyst, emerald, citrine, and topaz hues. A beautiful example of fine Roman glasswork! Size: 2.45" diameter x 4.95" H (6.2 cm x 12.6 cm)

Provenance: private Dere collection, East Coast, USA assembled between 1970 and 2000

#154211

  • Condition: Applied foot has some small chips. The rest of the vessel is intact, with light deposits and iridescence on surface. Vessel possesses a pontil scar or mark which indicates that the vessel was free-blown. The absence of such a mark would suggest that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or worn away over time.
