Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous blue glass amulet depicting the face of a lion with a very impressive mane. The lion's head is capped by a large ridged finial pierced through laterally to allow suspension. This amulet is inlaid into a silver backing with a rounded, bead-like border around its front edges. Sixteen 16 karat gold beads and approximately eighty blue glass beads complete the necklace, which has a modern cord with a modern clasp. This is a fascinating, rare style of jewelry that looks like what may have been worn by a Roman woman two thousand years ago! Size of amulet: 1.4" W x 2" H (3.6 cm x 5.1 cm); length of necklace: 13" L (33 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dere Family Collection, NY acquired in 1980's-2000's
