Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely free-blown yellow glass jar with blue trailing handles and rigaree applied to the body. The vessel sits upon a slightly concave bottom and rises to a spherical body with rounded shoulders, a corseted neck, and a collared rim. Encircling the body are three lines of rigaree, including two horizontal bands, with a zigzagging trail between. The flanking handles applied to the shoulders pull up to the rolled rim and fold into the lip in ribboning shapes. Across most of the surface is a layer of lustrous rainbow as well as silvery iridescence that formed as the glass aged and accentuates its beautiful form. Size: 3.25" W x 2.75" H (8.3 cm x 7 cm)

#157478

  • Condition: Minute nick to upper end of one trailed handle that's difficult to see. Surface wear and weathering commensurate with age. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
