Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful translucent green glass goblet that looks both remarkably modern in design and ancient in material and patinated surface. The upside-down bell-shape of the body sits atop a very narrow, short leg, above a round, thick ring foot. The rim is slightly thickened, creating a lip, and it was probably pleasing to drink from this glass. Stemmed goblets have been found alongside beakers, bottles, lamps, plates, bowls, and windows made of glass in archaeological sites throughout the Roman sphere of influence. Size: 2.65" W x 3.45" H (6.7 cm x 8.8 cm)

A glass vessel like this one would have been used in the preparation and consumption of food. Many people - including the wealthy - preferred glass vessels because they did not leave a taste or smell the way that metal ones did. Their clear forms allowed their contents to be easily known. A vessel like this one would have held wine.
