Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 2nd century CE. A gorgeous bowl that is free-blown from semi-translucent glass of a deep aubergine color. The squat bowl features a broad body and a flared rim surrounding the deep basin, all atop an applied, discoid foot with a rough pontil scar. Thin layers of silvery iridescence have formed within the bottom of the basin and this creates a graceful presentation. Size: 3.375" W x 1.9" H (8.6 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private Dere collection, East Coast, USA assembled between 1970 and 2000

#157476

  • Condition: Small chip to rim, with light encrustations, light weathering film, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits and light iridescence.
