Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fabulous free-blown and intact translucent glass flask! The vessel sits upon a ring base with a slightly concave bottom, presents with a flattened spherical body, and a long tubular neck that widens gently at the rolled rim. The clear glass is without coloration which was desirable for Romans who were in awe of solid but transparent objects. This vessel has nice areas of rainbow iridescence on the interior and is wonderfully preserved. Size: 3.5" W x 3.625" H (8.9 cm x 9.2 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Martin Wunsch collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s

  • Condition: Surface wear and areas of weathering film, with a pontil scar on the base. A pontil mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Excellent and intact with areas of rainbow iridescence.
