Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A lovely double unguentarium used for holding 2 types of cosmetic make-up. The vessel exhibits 2 tubular chambers that are conjoined along their midsection and has a slightly slanted base and a pair of applied handles on the sides. The exteriors of both chambers are further decorated with a single trail of thin glass that creates a spiraling rib across the surfaces. Size: 1.9" W x 4.25" H (4.8 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, purchased March 30, 2020; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private East Coast collection, New York, USA; ex-East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Small losses to glass trailing along both sides of interior section where chambers are conjoined. Small chip to upper tip of 1 handle, with light encrustations across most surfaces and within chambers, micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and light weathering film. Light iridescence and earthen deposits throughout. Vessel's slightly slanted base means it cannot stand upright unassisted.
