Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A spectacular Roman glass double unguentarium, sometimes called a balsamarium, with two sinuous trail handles on each side. The vessel is comprised of translucent yellow glass, though most is covered with incredible silvery and rainbow iridescence. The conjoined tubes have a continuous band of rigaree - running all the way from rim to base. Wealthy women in ancient Roman times would employ these pieces to contain their precious unguents or oils, or for holding two different colors of kohl eye makeup. A lovely example that is not only impressive for its form and technique, but also for the remarkable iridescence shimmering across the surface! The silver iridescence is virtually mirror-like, and the rainbow iridescence presents gorgeous hues of pink, purple, green, gold, and aqua! Simple breathtaking! Size: 5" H (12.7 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
