Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful unguentarium that is free-blown from semi-translucent glass of a pale yellow-green hue. The vessel is defined by a concave base and a rough pontil scar, a compressed bell-shaped lower body, a slender cylindrical neck - hence the name 'candlestick' unguentarium - and a flared rim with an in-folded lip. Thick layers of rainbow-hued iridescence have developed around the composition and nicely accentuate the soft spring hues. Size: 2.25" W x 5.2" H (5.7 cm x 13.2 cm).

#145135

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to body, neck, and rim, with a couple of stable hairline fissures to bell-shaped body, light encrustations, and minor weathering film, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits and great rainbow iridescence throughout.
