Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A shallow, translucent glass bowl with a smooth pontil mark on its underside. The sides of the vessel flare out slightly, rising to a narrow, rolled rim. A wheel cut ring on the interior forms a decorative mark that also may have marked the height of whatever was originally placed into it. Pretty rainbow iridescent patina gives the bowl a faint sheen. Size: 5.35" W x 1.6" H (13.6 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private Dere family collection, NYC, NY acquired in the 1980s/1990s.

#141969

  • Condition: Intact with rainbow iridescence and very light deposits. There is a very faint pontil mark on the underside. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
