Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful pair of glass vessels: a square-sided bottle and a kohl jar. The bottle presents a fascinating shape with 4 nubbin feet, a broad, ribbon-form handle, and a decorative pattern or manufacturer's mark on the base, all formed from translucent blue-green glass that is now enveloped in layers of weathering film and violet-hued iridescence that makes it appear opaque. Alternatively, the kohl jar was formed from opaque black glass to display a slender body with a corseted neck and flared mouth flanked by loop handles, all atop a petite base. Size of larger (square jar): 2.25" W x 5.25" H (5.7 cm x 13.3 cm)

  • Condition: Square vessel has pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
