Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. late 3rd to 5th century CE. A beautiful free-blown bottle formed from semi-translucent, pale-green glass with a concave base and smooth pontil scar, a bulbous body with an indented neck base, a cylindrical neck, and a discoid rim with an in-folded lip. The elegant presentation of the vessel is only furthered by the fiery rainbow-hued iridescence which envelops the exterior surfaces. Size: 2" W x 4.75" H (5.1 cm x 12.1 cm).

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonhams, London, Knightsbridge Antiquities Auction (May 8, 2013, part of lot 171); ex-Joseph Klein collection, New York, USA, formed between 1941 and 1980, thence by descent

#140140

  • Condition: Minor nicks to rim, body, and base, with some weathering film across most surfaces, and light abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. A smooth pontil scar indicates that the vessel was free-blown and that the scar was intentionally smooth or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits and stunning rainbow iridescence throughout.
