Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming example of a free-blown glass baby feeder exhibiting a translucent, turquoise-hued body. The vessel features a concave base with a thick, rough pontil scar, a relatively spherical body with a tapered feeding spout protruding outwards and downwards from one side, a sloped shoulder that transitions smoothly into the cylindrical neck, and a flared rim with an in-folded lip along the half closest to the spout perhaps for mitigating spillage when pouring the baby's food inside the glass body. Areas of rainbow-hued iridescence have developed across the exterior surfaces. Size: 2" W x 3.125" H (5.1 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000

#170166

  • Condition: Chip to tip of spout, with minor abrasions, pitting, and light encrustations across surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice iridescence throughout.
