Roman, Imperial Period, Divus Vespasian, died 79 CE. Rome mint. Struck under Titus, ca. 80 to 81 CE. Obverse: Laureate head right. Reverse: Foreparts of two capricorns, left and right, back to back, supporting round shield inscribed S C; globe below. Vespasian died of an infection on 23 June 79 CE, and was immediately succeeded by his son Titus. As emperor, he is best known for completing the Colosseum and for his generosity in relieving the suffering caused by two disasters, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE and a fire in Rome in 80.
