Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A pear-shaped, mold-made glass bottle. The body is faceted, with several horizontal dimples around the body. The thin neck rises to a flat, flared rim with a slightly rolled edge. The color is a dark aubergine, with a very light, silvery patina, especially on the shoulder. This is a unique and pretty example of an unguentarium, a vessel for holding perfumes, oils, and unguents as part of the cosmetic rituals of both male and female Roman citizens. After the invention of blown glass in the first century CE, glass became easier to produce, and so glass items entered everyday Roman life for the majority of households, oftentimes replacing pottery vessels. Size: 2.3" W x 3.5" H (5.8 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex Shlomo Moussaieff collection, Israel, collected 1948-2000
