Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A finely carved bone spoon, perhaps used for applying makeup or taking small quantities of medicine. The bowl is ovoid and only slightly concave. The thin handle is carved in a series of columns, each of varied design, terminating in a goblet-like shape. Perhaps the carver thought that the bone mirrored marble statues and that was the reason the whimsical architecture motifs. Size: 0.75" W x 5.25" H (1.9 cm x 13.3 cm)
