Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A nicely delineated couchant (Old French meaning "lying down") lion carved from grey basalt with white mineral deposits, lying down but with its head raised and facing front with well-delineated eyes, snout, mouth, and ears, all framed by a handsome mane, resting with forelegs and haunches folded beneath his body. A relatively docile attitude as opposed to the "rampant", "passant", and "sejant" poses also used in heraldry. Wood block base.
