Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca.19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful carnelian intaglio from the Ancient Roman Empire featuring a nude youth of satyr with a dog, set in a gold-plated ring to be wearable. Facing left and standing contrapposto, the figure holds a thyrsus in one hand - indicating he may be a satyr - and a petite object with extending drapery in the other. A tree rises at his back as his dog runs before him. Size of intaglio: 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); of ring: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 7.5; gold quality: 27.8% (equivalent to over 6 karats); weight: 3 grams
