Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful necklace strung with dozens of carnelian beads, hand-cut, polished, and drilled into various sizes and shapes. They are spherical, barrel, rhomboid, teardrop, and disc shaped, all with fiery tones of vermillion and sienna, a few have white swirled inclusions as well. The central pendant bead has been carved with faceted sides like a diamond. While the beads are all ancient, they have been strung in modern times to be wearable with a modern gold-plated lobster clasp. A lovely piece of wearable art certain to compliment any outfit with elegant style. Size (necklace): 16.75" L (42.5 cm); (large round bead): .5" W (1.3 cm)
