Late Roman / Byzantine, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A stunning silver brooch or button depicting a double-headed eagle in the center, surrounded by a concentric ring and scalloped border. On the verso are three integral loops with a folded back pin-like attachment above. The double-headed eagle is a symbol associated with the general concept of Empire as well as power. It was used during the late Roman to Byzantine period to represent the Empire's reign from the Near East to the West. Size: 1.125" in diameter (2.9 cm); Weight: 9.4 grams
