Description:

Late Roman Imperial Period & Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 3rd to 10th century CE. A collection of 96 cast bronze, leaded-bronze, copper, and brass weights for scale measurements and merchant use all with rounded or cube shapes. Rome implemented standard weights and measures to ensure consistency and to prevent corruption, especially amongst tax collectors and merchants. The Byzantine empire maintained this practice by creating these weights, often with the addition of Christian symbols. Size of largest: 0.96" Diameter x 0.76" H (2.4 cm x 1.9 cm); smallest: 0.28" L x 0.28" W x 0.15" H (0.7 cm x 0.7 cm x 0.4 cm)
