Description:

Ancient Near East, Eastern Empire, late Roman Imperial period to early Byzantine Empire, ca. late 4th to 7th century CE. A cast-bronze oil lamp with a narrow mortise on the bottom to mount it atop a lamp stand or a processional pole. The lamp features a bulbous body with a narrow neck channel, a circular base, a cruciform thumb rest above an openwork handle, and an upturned wick spout. Atop the central fill hole is a hinged brass lid resembling a scallop shell, a prevalent motif on early bronze lamps like this example. Size: 4" L x 1.6" W x 2.1" H (10.2 cm x 4.1 cm x 5.3 cm)
