Description:

Roman, Imperial to Byzantine Era, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A large bronze cauldron-shaped pot featuring a separate iron ring neck and handle for suspension. Likely used as a utilitarian cooking vessel, this pot's interior displays evidence of repairs, with bronze panels attached to cover small holes or reinforce the vessel's structure. Cleaning and scouring methods for metal pots often involved water and sand, which, over time, would wear down the metal, necessitating repairs through patching or soldering. Size: 9.25" Diameter x 7" H (23.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer

  • Condition: Old repairs to the interior with 2 bronze patches riveted to the bottom and side walls. Heavy mineral encrustations and patina. Iron is extremely oxidized and actively flaking with the slightest of handling. We recommend applying a stabilizing coating to the iron.
