Description:

**Originally Listed At $1000**

Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A heavy cast bronze candelabrum that stands on three bent lion's hind paws each atop two small discs. The center of the candelabrum has a trio of well-rendered leaves, one between each leg, with vines climbing up to the central socket; a tiny bar rises from the socket rim to support the candle. Size: 8.9" W x 4.35" H (22.6 cm x 11 cm)

Bronze furniture was a luxury item in the eastern Roman Empire, and reserved only for the richest households. Even there, they seem to have been heirlooms; some scholars believe that they were passed down through multiple generations, gaining additions like crosses, new lids, or new feet to suit changing decorative styles. Imagine how the light would have played off of this when it was new and polished to shine!
