Description:

Central Europe to Near East, Roman to Byzantine Empire, ca. 1st to 10th century CE. This is a fine collection of ancient bronze and brass artifacts of both projectile points and jewelry; 4 spear or arrow heads, a ring, a cross pendant, and 2 fibulae. The ring is a fine brass example of a cast signet with a faint motif etched upon the ovoid face. The fibula are classic ornaments for securing clothing used for centuries by Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, and other ancient people from the earliest times until late antiquity to pin garments such as togas or chitons at the shoulder- in these two examples the bow shaped form retains the original spring and claps. The Byzantine bronze crucifix is cast with a low relief Christ on one side and the Virgin mother and child on the other side- although faint. The projectile points are bronze cast with petaloid blade and lengthy tangs for hafting to shafts. Size of largest spear head: 5.25" L x 1" W (13.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
