Near East / Eastern Mediterranean, Roman to Byzantine era, ca. 3rd century BCE to 6th century CE. Ancient glass and stone beads strung on modern gold-plated silver ear hooks, chains, and band as wearable earrings and a ring. The ring is comprised of a modern U-shaped band with coiled filigree and a spherical agate bead. The earrings have delicate modern chains that suspend carnelian stone and glass eye beads with concentric circles in black, yellow, and red on white, which is layered over the black core. Eye beads were symbols to ward against evil forces and became popular throughout the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. The ring band can be adjusted to fit from approximately a US ring size 3.5 up to a size 9. Size of earrings: 2" L x 0.5" W (5.1 cm x 1.3 cm); ring stone: 0.4" Diameter (1 cm); silver quality: 90% to 92%; gold quality: 1%; total combined weight: 9.5 grams
