Description:

Late Roman to Early Byzantine, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A gorgeous 23K+ gold crescent-shaped pendant with an attractive rope-patterned gold wire border that curls at its termini, and five glass inlays of sage green hues and different shapes - including a central circular glass inlay flanked by two square glass inlays, followed by two triangular glass inlays to complement the pointed terminals of the pendant. A beautiful example of ancient goldwork that showcases the skill of ancient Roman (possibly early Byzantine) goldsmiths. The crescent moon was associated with Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon usually depicted in Roman art paired with the Sun and driving a four-horse chariot known as a quadriga. Lunar motifs are also linked with the Roman goddesses Diana and Juno. Size: 1" L x 1" W (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm); cord measures 21.5" L (54.6 cm); weight: 2/4 grams

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities; ex Fortuna Fine Art Gallery, March 22, 2007
