Late Roman/Early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. An 18 karat gold signet ring depicting a pair of angels or archangels delineated in fugitive black paint on the face. Angels were believed to reflect the beauty and eternal youth of god as well as serve as messengers and executors of his will. Weight: 5.6 grams. Size: face measures .625" L x .375" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm); opening measures .75" L x .5" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm), since ring is misshapen, it will not fit most fingers, but could be worn as a pendant suspended from a chain

Provenance: Ex-New Hampshire collection, most acquired prior to 1985
