Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A fine cast tinned-bronze male togatus figure presenting youthful features and a muscular physique. The man stands tall in a dignified posture, a toga draped over his left shoulder and down past his knees, and with well-defined pectoral and abdominal muscles shown through the exposed side of the vestment. His wide-set arms, both bent at the elbows, perhaps held an offering in each hand or on a sizable tray meant to be placed atop an altar. His tightly-cropped coiffure features several finely incised striations indicative of locks of hair, and almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, thin lips, and puffy cheeks and ears comprise his pensive countenance. Beautiful green patina has developed across the surfaces over the centuries. Size: 1.4" W x 3.625" H (3.6 cm x 9.2 cm); 4.1" H (10.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Swiss collection of F.H.; ex-private W. Rosenbaum collection, Ascona, Switzerland, acquired before 1984
