Description:

Rome, (Egypt ?), late 2nd / 3rd century CE. Bronze depiction of the goddess, clothed in highwaisted chiton, with mantle drawn about hips and secured in front with an Isis knot, and wearing a diadem, stands to left within her shrine before a small round altar. She originally held a sistrum in her outstretched right hand and a situla in her lowered left hand. The shape of the plaque follows the contours of the columned shrine, surmounted by a pediment, embellished with a half moon, and three floral acroteria. 4-3/8"H (11.1 cm).

The fine ring-shaped incisions above the goddess's right hand indicate that originally a silver sistrum was soldered to the plaque. - For a votive plaque similar in style and composition in the Musée des Beaux-Arts Lyon, inv. no. E 24, cf. S. Boucher, Bronzes Romains Figurés du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Cat. Lyon (Lyon 1973) 16f., no. 30 with illus. For the type of Isis and her attributes cf. LIMC V (1990) no. 37 s.v. Isis (T. Tam Tinh).
