Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A solid cast bronze handle with a gracefully, high arched strap, thumb rest, and most impressive, the end terminating in a lovely theater mask with an expressive visage, perhaps representing a heroine of a Tragedy or Comedy, with an oval face and a pointed chin, full lips, almond shaped eyes gazing ahead, wearing a headdress or elaborate, wavy coiffure with sidelocks. Beautiful green and brown patina! Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: handle itself measures 5" (12.7 cm.); 6-1/4" (15.9 cm) on stand.

Provenance: Ex-private New York collection; ex-private German collection acquired in 1992.
