Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An apple-shaped jug with a narrow, cylindrical spout and very slight flared rim. Twin applied handles with arched form flow from just below the neck to the shoulder. The base is a separate piece and flat, with signs of ancient repair, as if it was replaced in antiquity. As it was made of bronze, this was probably an expensive item, perhaps passed down as an heirloom for a Roman family. Size: 7.15" W x 6.25" H (18.2 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
