Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautifully preserved cast bronze vase or jar with an applied disc-shaped foot decorated with a relief acanthus leaf motif, and twin applied handles attached to the neck by three bronze pins. These handles arch outward, with their highest point slightly above the elevation of the narrow, flat rim. The body of the vessel is amphora-like, with a corseted neck and wide mouth. The handles are decorated with two deep ridges. Roman bronze vessels like this one display the Romans' complete mastery of casting technology. This vase would have been used domestically by a family wealthy enough to have bronze vessels rather than ceramic; it likely ended its service placed into a tomb. Size: 6.8" W x 4.55" H (17.3 cm x 11.6 cm)
