Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze thumb that was perhaps once part of a larger statue. The thick finger has a delineated nail plate, a slightly upturned outer tip, and faint wrinkles atop the 'skin' between the proximal phalanx and first metacarpal. The interior is filled with lead to increase its weight, and this was likely done to add stability to the finger, hand, and statue as a whole. Size: 1.9" L x 0.9" W (4.8 cm x 2.3 cm).

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
