Description:

**Originally Listed At $1000**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pretty and well-made example of a bronze wine strainer, now aged to a dull golden "river patina" from deposition in water. It has a long, flat handle with small finials at the terminal and the middle. This is integral to a deep-sided bowl with a wide, flared rim and tiny dots of perforations around the sides and the underside. This strainer was used to filter out the sediment when serving wine, a crucial tool, especially for ancient methods of wine making. A very similar example is known from the Roman tomb of Silistra in modern day Bulgaria. Size: 6.8" W x 14.9" H (17.3 cm x 37.8 cm); 16.75" H (42.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-collection H.G., Rhineland-Palatinate, 1970-1999
