Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A whimsical, cast bronze weight from a steelyard (statera) balance in the form of a standing soldier, depicted with fascinating clothing and a dynamic, striding stance. Under one arm is a sword. Steelyard balances were used to weight loads by moving a counterweight like this fellow along the beam until it balanced and then reading the incised numeral. Vitruvius describes them and their function in his De Architectura, Book X, 3-4. See this example of a full statera with a weight included that sold at Christie's in 2008: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-late-roman-bronze-steelyard-balance-and-5060684-details.aspx Size: 1.5" W x 2.95" H (3.8 cm x 7.5 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
