Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A charming cast-bronze figurine of a ram standing atop fused forelegs and hindlegs. The ram has a stocky body with a recessed underside that is filled with lead, a thick tail draped behind the posterior, a rounded chest, and a wide neck. The conical head features petite eyes, a tapered snout, and a pair of curled horns on the sides. Mottled patina envelops the creature in hues of brown, russet, and green. By Roman times, the ram was already an ancient symbol of virility and masculinity, and the god Mercury (Greek Hermes) was often accompanied by a ram to symbolize fertility. Size: 2.75" L x 1.125" W x 2.25" H (7 cm x 2.9 cm x 5.7 cm)
