Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely cast bronze attachment in the form of a sleeping boy or Eros, curled up in the fetal position on a rocky outcrop, resting his arm on his hip and holding a cup. Beautiful dark green patina graces the surface. In the Roman period, Eros had become a child (in earlier Greek times, he was often a muscular youth), but he retained his mischievous air, ready to help couples fall in love through not entirely innocent interventions. While he may be crafty, here his pose suggests insouciance. Size: 2.5" L (6.4 cm); 1.625" H (4.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-German collector D.T., acquired before 1994
