Description:

Greek, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A brilliant bronze situla (from the Latin word for bucket or pail), a term used for a variety of elaborate bucket-shaped vessels from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages. This one presents an apple-shaped body with a sharply turned shoulder leading to an abbreviated neck with a gently flared rim. Twin ring handles are suspended from decorative attachments with matching though slightly smaller spool-like ornanaments - each one adorned by three ribbed rising hemispheric bands - just above. Even larger versions of these are placed 90 degrees from these on opposite sides of the shoulder. All sits upon a concave base, and gorgeous patina of azure blue and forest green hues graces the surface. Size: 12.25" W handlespan x 7.875" H (31.1 cm x 20 cm)
