Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, Augustus / Divius, died 14 CE, struck under Tiberius 35 to 36 CE. Orichalcum sestertius (25.9 g). Rome Mint. Obverse: DIVO AVGVSTO SPQR, seated figure of Augustus on car drawn left by 4 elephants. Reverse: TI CAESAR DIVI. AVG F. AVGVST PM TR POT . XXXVII, around large SC. RIC Tiberius 62, Cohen 307. Scarce. Size: 1.5" W (3.8 cm)

This coin played an interesting role in Roman history: it was struck by Tiberius to establish the connection between the Divine Augustus and Tiberius's own son Drusus, who he wanted to name his successor. The death of Germanicus in 18 CE had left Rome without any further Julian men of sufficient age and qualification to assume the throne, and Tiberius had to play his hand carefully in establishing his own dynasty.
