Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A spectacular pair of Roman bronzeworks, both cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. First we have a sweet sitting Cupid (Eros) with open wings. In the Roman period, Eros had become a child (to the earlier Greeks, he was a muscular youth), but here he retains his mischievous air, ready to help couples fall in love through not-entirely-innocent interventions. Next, is an elegant classical female draped bust, possibly representing Venus (Aphrodite) - the goddess of love and mother to Cupid (Eros) - wearing a lovely diadem upon her upswept coiffure, most likely an infandibulum lid from an oil lamp. A lot of two wonderful Roman bronzes. Comes with custom stand. Size: Cupid measures 2" H (5.1 cm); bust measures 1.625" H (4.1 cm); 2.25" W x 2.875" H (5.7 cm x 7.3 cm) on stand

Provenance: private Dr. K.B. collection of Munich, Germany, acquired in the 1970s

  • Condition: Bust is most likely an infandibulum lid from an oil lamp. The Cupid has a small loss to the left wing and the right hand is missing. Overall a nice age patina.
