Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze figurine of a recumbent lion laying atop an integral plinth. The lion has a stylized flowing mane, body fur denoted by chevron-style impressions along the spine, each of four legs positioned underneath its muscular torso, and a sinuous tail curled atop its posterior. The beast's expressive visage is comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a large snout, perky ears, and an open mouth that one can imagine roaring. The artist who made the mold had probably seen lions, perhaps at the Roman Forum or in an amphitheater local to their area. Replete with fine details and covered in a dark-green patina, this is a fabulous miniature from the Roman Empire! Size: 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm).
