Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming cast bronze ram's head with inlaid stone eyes. The head is hollow, probably made to be a decorative attachment on a chariot, perhaps covering the hub of a wheel. The face is marked by a long snout, large eyes, and two massive, curved horns that rise in relief from the sides of the head. Roman chariots were not used for warfare, but instead in circuses and triumphal processions. As a result, elaborate decorative finials like this one became de rigeur, lending a unique look to each chariot. Imagine the sun flashing off of the dark, polished bronze surface that this would have had when made! Size: 2.8" L x 3.05" W x 3.4" H (7.1 cm x 7.7 cm x 8.6 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
