Description:

**Originally Listed At $1000**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A cast bronze protome with a horse leaping out in high relief, nearly in the round! The horse is depicted with a finely detailed mane, visage, and front legs with hooves! Perforations line the periphery of the base for attachment. The patina is a beautiful grey-green and does not obscure any of the details of the horse. Horses were signs of power and military prowess, symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. Size: 1.625" L x 1.875" in diameter x 4.125" H (4.1 cm x 4.8 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA Collection; ex-Gorny and Mosch, Munich, Germany, 1980s
