Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A cast bronze pitcher that rests elegantly on a concave foot. The globular body has a nice grape leaf applique adorning the base of the handle, and the handle connects with two symmetrical volutes at the rim. The rim of the vessel is slightly flared and rests above a tall neck. A ring around the bottom of the neck accents this graceful piece. The bronze surface has a nice dark umber, nearly black coloration and light green areas of patina. A lovely vessel perhaps for pouring wine during a special meal or symposium. Size: 5.4" W x 9.12" H (13.7 cm x 23.2 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000 from Gabriele Gebhart, Magna Graecia, Germany
