Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine, hollow-cast bronze example of a patera handle terminating in the head of a ram. The handle has several grooves along its length, and the curved attachment panels on the verso each display a raised, spiraling volute. The patera was used for serving drinks and food at banquets, or for carrying libations used in religious ceremonies and funerals. High-quality bronze examples like this one often have either a ram or wolf head finial on their handles. Custom museum-quality display stand included.   • Condition: This is a handle from a larger vessel. Slight bending to overall form of verso attachment panels, light softening to some finer details, and minor abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and great green and brown patina throughout.
